Probate and Estate Administration in New Jersey and New York

Comprehensive guidance for families settling a loved one’s estate.

Losing someone you love is hard enough without the added stress of legal documents and deadlines. If you’re facing probate or need help settling an estate, our office will walk you through the process clearly and compassionately, so you can focus on your family, not the documents.

Understanding probate

Probate is the court-supervised process of transferring a person’s assets after their death. It confirms the validity of a will (if one exists), appoints an executor or administrator, ensures debts and taxes are paid, and distributes the remaining property to heirs or beneficiaries.

In New Jersey, probate is usually handled through the Surrogate’s Court in the county where the person lived. While the process may seem straightforward, the details—deadlines, filings, tax forms, and asset transfers—can quickly become overwhelming without guidance.

When a will isn’t in place

If your loved one passed away without a will, the court will appoint an administrator and distribute assets according to state intestacy laws. We’ll guide you through that process as well, making sure everything is filed correctly and every step is completed on time.
