Understanding probate
Probate is the court-supervised process of transferring a person’s assets after their death. It confirms the validity of a will (if one exists), appoints an executor or administrator, ensures debts and taxes are paid, and distributes the remaining property to heirs or beneficiaries.
In New Jersey, probate is usually handled through the Surrogate’s Court in the county where the person lived. While the process may seem straightforward, the details—deadlines, filings, tax forms, and asset transfers—can quickly become overwhelming without guidance.
When a will isn’t in place
If your loved one passed away without a will, the court will appoint an administrator and distribute assets according to state intestacy laws. We’ll guide you through that process as well, making sure everything is filed correctly and every step is completed on time.
